This project was the first of many projects that I did at Hunter Design School, in Newcastle. In the project, we were to create a label and packaging for a local wine maker’s upcoming Sangiovese wine bottle. It was to fit within a Mediterranean theme but inspired by the Newcastle beaches. The final design theme had to have a story behind it, of why we chose the colours, fonts, and creative name.

Mine was called ‘la libertà’, which translated into ‘freedom,’ which fit with my design theme of the ocean, I always felt free and at peace when surrounded by the ocean and I wanted to project that in my design.

I was asked to make the design work with an antique green glass bottle. I was required to have either a front & back label or one wrap-around label. On the back label or back part of the label, I was to have any legalities on it for drinking wine, and alcohol. I was also required to design and produce packing or boxing for the wine bottle.

For this project I was to set milestones to check off as I went, to help us from getting overwhelmed with the project. The milestones I set were; creating the design ideas, creating a logo name, designing the ideas (which were freehand to start with then transferred to Adobe Illustrator), finalising the idea, producing the packaging and the label, and then proofing the idea for submission to the teachers and client. I was responsible for reaching the milestones and completing them all by the deadline.

The final artworks were presented to the owners of Inner City Wine Makers, and they chose that year’s label for the bottle.
